Grey Eagle Casino Smokey Robinson

Nov 25, 2019  In South West Calgary there are few hotels so that Grey Eagle casino and hotel serves many community needs. For many the casino is an attraction and gives the glitter and flashing lights and noises one expects of a large casino. The casino also brings in very well known musicians or other acts into a decent sized auditorium.

After a dozen years as a staple attraction on the east riverfront, the Detroit River Days festival will have a new home this June, moving across downtown to West Riverfront Park.

Smokey Robinson, playing perhaps his biggest hometown show in decades, will headline the fest's opening night on June 21. His appearance comes as River Days partners with the Motown Museum to help mark the label's 60th anniversary.

Festival admission will be $5 daily. Other main-stage acts include Mary Jane Girls (June 21), Brandy (June 22), Brian McKnight (June 22), Faith Evans (June 23) and Carl Thomas (June 23). Local bands and performers will fill two other stages.

Premium seating will also be available for $35, available in advance at RiverDays.com/music.

Presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and officially billed as the 13th Annual Detroit River Days presented by Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, the festival will include children's entertainment, the signature air show performed by the Tuskegee Airmen and a food-truck rally featuring 110-plus food trucks — what organizers are calling the biggest-ever in the state.

The move to West Riverfront Park, home to the annual Mo Pop rock festival, comes as the 22-acre site is set to be transformed into the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park. Construction will begin in 2020, part of the conservancy's ongoing redevelopment of 5½ miles of Detroit riverfront.

River Days will move to another site next year as construction work gets underway, said conservancy spokesman Marc Pasco.

Motown will loom large at this year's fest: Some food trucks will offer Motown-themed dishes in a competition that will include tasting judges from the museum. 'Motown 60 at 6' will feature an hour of music and spoken-word entertainment at 6 p.m. daily, including performers from the museum's 'Amplify' singing competition and 'Motown Mic' poetry contest.

The Four Tops will perform June 20 at River Days' VIP preview party, Shimmer on the River. Tickets for that event are available at the conservancy website.
